Toronto-based makeup artist Lisa Aharon shares expert tips for applying natural eyeliner with a contemporary flair.
Who would have thought that a modeling class could be a turning point in my life? It didn’t lead to a global career, but it did help me refine my signature style: black eyeliner inspired by Angelina Jolie.
Lisa Aharon, a Toronto-based makeup artist with experience backstage at Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler, offers valuable insights on achieving a modern take on natural eyeliner.
Cleanup Crew
Aharon advises using a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover to perfect your eyeliner shape until you achieve the desired look.
Defined Lines
For a bold, graphic style reminiscent of the 60s, opt for liquid liner, which offers long-lasting wear, according to Aharon. Applying liquid eyeliner along the natural lash line suits everyone. Use a flat brush and gently wiggle it along the base from the outer to the inner corners for a seamless finish.
Pencil Partner
A black or colored pencil is perfect for crafting a smokey eye. I love the softer, smudged styles that are trending on runways this spring, as they create a captivating yet effortless vibe, notes Aharon. Additionally, colors and metallics are making a splash. Pencil liners are simple to smudge with your fingers, a cotton swab, or a brush, and can be layered with colored eyeshadow for various effects. They can also be used to line the inner rim of the eye, adding a dramatic touch.
